Tips for SuppressionList Queries of Zip Codes

First, prepare and upload your zip codes to a SuppressionList

SuppressionList’s integration with LeadConduit allows you to query a list of zip codes in real time to determine whether a lead is in a service area or eligible for a particular program.

Pre-requisite: The ActiveProspect customer will prepare a list of zip codes corresponding to the service area (or area of eligibility).

When you prepare your list of zip codes to upload, adhere to the following best practices:

  • File requirements:
  • one zip code per line
  • filename does not include any spaces
  • make the file extension “.CSV”.
  • Include leading zeros: ensure all zip codes have five digits, including zeros if they occur in the first place; if the zeros at the left of some zip codes are not included, you will not be able to match that zip code included in a lead. To check your list, edit the file with a text editor. Please note: by default, Excel and some other spreadsheet programs will remove leading zeros. A list of values such as this one will not be successful for a comparison of zip codes:

Instead, make sure your list of zip codes includes leading zeros to bring the number of digits in each value to 5.

Once you’ve stored a group of service area zip codes in the SuppressionList, you can configure LeadConduit to compare the current lead’s zip code to determine if a lead is in the service area. If the SuppressionList contains the zip code, Suppression List returns a simple “found=true” plus the date and time that value was added to the list.

To add the “SuppressionList - Query” step, plus a filter that is included by default, to your flow:

  1. Navigate to Flows from the left navigation; pick and edit your flow
  2. Pull down “Add Step” to “Add-on”
  3. Search for “SuppressionList - Query List”
  4. Click “Add to Flow” at the bottom right of the tile found
  5. Complete the wizard, choosing your zip code SuppressionList and the field “Postal Code”. Then, two steps will be added to the flow.
  6. Configure the filter:
  7. Enter a name such as “Stop processing if the lead is not in service area” next to “Filter”
  8. Just below, change “is true” to “is false” and change “Duplicate Lead” to an error you would understand, like “not in zip code list”
  9. Press Save at top right to save the flow

The resulting “SuppressionList - Query” step in LeadConduit compares the current lead’s zip code to the list:

If you click “Edit Field Mappings” your mappings of the SuppressionList and field will be apparent and editable.

The filter step following the “SuppressionList - Query” step stops the lead from progressing if it does not match any zip code in the SuppressionList, i.e., if “found” = “false”. This is how you only accept leads whose zip codes match your SuppressionList.

Separating leads into several service areas

What if you have several service areas, and need to identify which one in order to make lead decisions? You’ll want to:

  1. Create one SuppressionList for each service area
  2. Use the “SuppressionList Item Found In” value in step rules and filters, in order to take action on leads whose zip codes fall into one or another of the service area SuppressionLists.
